About Hippo Lodge

  • Close Panel

Hippo Lodge is a rustic small lodge with six 'chalet' style solid built rooms on the banks of the Kafue River at one of it's widest points.

Run by Zambians Bruce and Caitlin and head guide Joe, this lodge has a friendly feel to it and provides great guiding and hosting in a relaxing setting. There is a large lounge and dining area with seperate bar and a refreshing small pool overlooking the river.

The rooms are lit by parafin lamps at night, solar power is available in the main area and batteries can be charged here. Currently four rooms are stone built and two thatched but they are soon to be converted all to stone.

Day and night drives can be enjoyed here, along with bush walks and the area close to the river is a great place for sightings of the elusive leopard. Boat safaris are fantastic for birders and plenty of game can be seen drinking at the waters edge. A unique experience here is a trip to the nearby hot springs - a sand bottomed jacuzzi in a pond in the bush! Candle lit evening sundowners and snacks will never again be had in such a surreal location!

This is a fantastic central location in the northern section of Kafue and attracts a huge variety of wildlife. It can be linked easilly with other lodges and camps in the northern section and compliments particularly with the Busanga Plains area which is 1-2 hours by boat then a 2-3 hour game drive transfer away.

Pricing guidelines for Zambia

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless airlines have special offers). Zambia combines well with Malawi and Botswana.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

  £50 to £150

We had a very eventful stay here having arrived by boat from Lufupa Lodge and seen two leopard on the river banks on the way, we then saw another on a night drive from Hippo Lodge and the final icing on the cake was when we went to our room after dinner to find the fourth leopard of the day on the verandah of our room - probably had been curled up on the sofa prior to our disturbing it!  So maybe it should be called Leopard Lodge ....! The lodge is owner run and they are great fun, but the rooms were are bit odd in that no two were the same, so beware which room is booked, some are better than others.

One surreal experience I will always remember was having a gin and tonic in a hot spring inside the park (which was no more than a muddy pond really!) accompanied by a hippo ... yes really!  A semi 'tame' hippo who lives a solitary life in the pool ...
