Bilimungwe is a cool and comfortable trails camp set beneath magnificent mahogany trees on the edge of a small plain in a riverine forest close to the watercourse of the main Luangwa River. The camp re-opened in July 2011 following an extensive refurbishment.
The camp consists of four reed and thatch chalets with en-suite waterfall shower, toilet and double vanities. Two of the chalets have two queen sized double beds and the other two chalets have one jing size bed each. All have large mosquito nets and an individual rechargeable lighting system. The chalets are set on raised platforms and each has its own viewing deck.
The cool and airy lounge, dining area and fully stocked bar are constructed on raised decking with views of Bilimungwe's permanent water hole and abundant game. The waterhole constantly attracts all sorts of wildlife including leopard and the small and personal nature of the camp with the optimum guest number of 8 means the wildlife is not disturbed. There is a vehicle available for drives but walks are the main activity here, it is also possible to walk to some of the other Bush Camp Company camps from here. Day and night drives are possible and a favourite evening activity is to have sundowners on Kapamba River before enjoying a night drive back to camp for dinner.
The main guide here is usually Manda Chisanga who won the Wanderlust guide of the year gold award in 2006. Born in 1972 he spent most of his younger years following his construction worker grandfather round Zambia which gave him an interest in exploring his own country and after starting as a veterinary assistant became a guide and has spent most of his guiding career in the southern area of Luangwa with Bush Camp Company.
