About Lake Mburo National Park

  • Close Panel

One of Uganda's smaller national parks but well worth a visit with a mix of lakes and plains and fantastic for bird watching. Game drives, walks and boat trips can be enjoyed here and it is within easy reach of Kampala and ideally situated for a stopover between the capital and the gorilla parks to the west.

The park covers an area of around 260km square and has a good mix of habitats and scenery with rolling grasslands and hills and areas of acacia forest. There are five main lakes, the largest of which is Lake Mburo itself lying within the boundaries of the park. Many plains animals are found here such as zebra, buffalo, topi, eland, bush pigs and plenty of hippos in the waterways. The wetland areas support a huge variety of birdlife with over 350 species. Of the many antelope species that thrive here the sitatunga are more unusual and found around the swamp areas. Predators here include leopard, jackal, hyaena and the smaller mongoose species which can be seen after dark. Lions were hunted to extinction in the 70s and their current status in the area is unknown. Vervet monkeys and baboon are common here.

There is a tented camp near the lake inside the park and a lovely eco-lodge just outside the park, click on accommodation for details.
