Kampala was founded in the late 1800s but was actually the political centre of Buganda for a few decades previous. Following Uganda’s turbulent political years in the 1970s, it is now a thriving modern capital city and a relatively safe one. Tourism is on the up in the country generally. The city is set in rolling hills which makes for an attractive backdrop to the sky rise buildings. The central area is packed with modern shops, banks and restaurants and there is a vibrant night life. A colourful traditional market is worth a visit and there are some interested historical sights and gardens. There are several good standard hotels. The Uganda Wildlife Authority headquarters are here. This is where gorilla permits are administered.
Kampala’s international airport is located in Entebbe, 35km away, which was previously the capital of Uganda. Entebbe itself is a much quieter town, located in a leafy area on the shores of Lake Victoria. The Botanical Gardens here are worth a visit and there are a selection of hotels and restaurants.
