About Primate Lodge

  • Close Panel

Primate Lodge is located in the heart of Kibale Forest National Park. It is a comfortable tented camp offering a great base from which to view the range of wildlife in the forest and park. The tents are all set on raised wooden platforms and each has a private veranda offering views over the forest. All tents have ensuite bathrooms with showers. There is a treehouse high in the canopy for those with a sense of adventure!

The restaurant serves both local and international cuisine and the adjacent bar and lounge areas are excellent places to relax after a day's game viewing. the most popular activity here is chimp trekking but there are also opportunties for guided nature walks and nocturnal walks (subject to availability). The visitor centre is very close to the lodge.

The easy Bigodi Marsh walk can show you 5-6 monkey species sush as colobus, red-tailed monkeys and grey-cheeked mangabeys.

Pricing guidelines for Uganda

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £500 to £700 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Uganda combines well with Rwanda and Kenya. Please note that gorillas permits add on about US$500 per visit. We charge these to you at the time of booking.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

  £50 to £150

Primate Lodge Kibale has the best position if you're coming to see the chimps - which is why most people come here!  It is right on the doorstep of the park HQ from where the chimp treks begin. Not only does this mean you have instant access for the chimp treks, but also it allows you to consider night walk from the HQ, which would not be so easy to plan if you were further away.
The lodge has luxury tents and cheaper cabins.  I stayed in a tent and it was very comfortable, with a large en-suite bathroom. Weirdly, there was an earthquake when I stayed, but apparently beds do not normally rattle in the middle of the night!
I found the staff friendly and helpful, and the food very good (especially the soups). On the evening we had singing and dancing from a local troupe which was fun - and there's little else to do on an evening.
By the way, the treehouse is really NOT worth considering for a night. It's far too rickety and very remote.  I'd suggest you use it like a hide, but no more.

Amanda Marks, Tribes director, stayed here 1 night in March 2010.
