About Oliver's Camp

  • Close Panel

Oliver's Camp is situated in the centre of  Tarangire National Park. The camp is ideally placed to access the yearly migrations of wildlife, and to view impressive concentrations at waterholes and in the spectacular Silale swamps. This area offers the best chance of seeing lion, leopard and cheetah and, especially during the dry season, the swamps are filled with elephant, buffalo and zebra.

The camp features 10 beautifully furnished guest tents. Solid wooden furniture, beautiful textiles and gorgeous warm showers that can be taken under the Tarangire sky. Every evening, guests relax or read in the lounge and library tent, or drink sundowners at the fireplace, from which superb views of landscape and sunset can be enjoyed.

Being centrally located in the park, Oliver's Camp gives you the opportunity to easily go north or south for game viewing.  Walking safaris are the speciality of the camp, and especially on walking safaris, the depth of knowledge and experience of the camp naturalist guides makes the experience one to never forget.

Walking safaris can take an hour or a whole morning or afternoon, but combined with fly camping, they can take several days, letting you discover the most remote parts of Tarangire. The light weight fly camp is an extension of the main Oliver's Camp. The fly camp is typically booked as part of a walking safari or simply as a completely private night away from the main camp. Tents are made of thick mosquito mesh, separating you from bugs, but allowing you to see skies filled with stars and passing animals at night. Fly camping is about adventure, not luxury: beds are comfortable and the crew cooks amazing meals in the middle of the wilderness, but tents are simple, with outside shower and bathroom facilities. For those who appreciate the true luxury of absolute proximity to nature and the private, intense and overwhelming experience that fly camping is, this experience at Oliver's Camp is one that will stay with you for a lifetime.

All in all Oliver's is a highly recomended permanent bush camp.

Best time

Tarangire is definitely best in the dry seasons from about July to October/mid-November before the rains come. This is the time that the permanent Tarangire River attracts wildlife from miles around, especially elephants. There is of course resident game here all year though, and sometimes you can see really huge herds of elephants here early in the year before the rains which tend to arrive by mid-late March.

Inclusions

Your stay is based on full board with daily gameviewing activities.

Meals

Meals are eaten at a communal table, unless requested otherwise. There is a dining area under the main thatched building, but there is also a lovely dining deck under a huge tree, and a romantic dinner on the verandah of your own tent can also be arranged. Meals are three-courses, and are high quality cuisine.

Pricing guidelines for Tanzania

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Tanzania can combine easily with other East African countries.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
£

  £50 to £150

I really was wondering whether it was worth the effort to drive all this way down the park to stay at this lodge. It is a long way down and the roads can be bad. However, I got here and definitely decided that it IS worth it - though I would not stay for less that 2 nights! At the right times of year this is a special place, and with all the varied activities you can do, it offers a unique experience within the park. I loved it.

The camp had no guests when I visited but the staff were welcoming and showed me round.  The lounge tent is very cosy and luxurious and the guest tents are all very well fitted out and comfortable.  The washing facilities are 'bush style' but all mod cons provided.  It's very much a 'bush camp' and great if you want to be away from the world and experience a very quiet part of Tarangire.  However, I would query what the game viewing is like at the time of year you visit as Oliver's is very remote and an extremely long drive from the main park gate, so it depends what else you combine it with as to what order I would recommend including it.  There is an airstrip fairly close if guests prefer to fly in.
