About Rhino Lodge

  • Close Panel

Rhino Lodge is a small place offering simple but clean en-suite accommodation in a wonderful wooded setting near Ngorongoro Crater rim. It's not for everyone as the rooms are quite basic, but if you're not looking for fancy, well this is a great value option.

There are 24 rooms, simply but attractively furnished with bright Maasai textiles. All rooms have en-suite shower room. There are also small verandahs from which guests can watch the grazing buffalo and elephants and also enjoy fine sunsets. It is chilly up here at night, especially July to September, but each room has a small woodburner to keep you cosy.

The lounge/dining area has 2 large fireplaces, ideal for cool evenings. There are comfy sofas and chairs where guests can relax and chat about the day's events and activities. Meals are served buffet style, with plentiful and tasty food.

Tribes clients will always be with their own driver/guide if staying at Rhino Lodge, it is only a short hop down into the Crater from here. Ideal.

Pricing guidelines for Tanzania

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Tanzania can combine easily with other East African countries.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
£

  £50 to £150

  £150 to £300

  £300 to £500

'Oh my goodness, it looks like a school' was my first thought on seeing Rhino Lodge. I didn't think I was going to like it a bit. Gilles, the manager, took me round though and I soon warmed to the place. Yes, it's basic (and cheap) with no frills. However, it's also clean and comfy, in a lovely position near the Crater rim and has a cosy lounge/diner. The new managers are making small changes to the place which will make a positive difference, but Gilles promised that this will never be a luxury lodge - thank goodness as there are so many already! I hope it remains the unpretentious yet comfortable great value lodge that it is.
