About Plantation Lodge

  • Close Panel

Plantation Lodge is surrounded by coffee plantations and the famous green hills of Africa that Hemingway found so inspiring. It offers a romantic setting and high standards of accommodation, food and service.

This small owner-run lodge has 22 elegant rooms and suites. The accommodation is divided into different self-contained houses, so the place has a private feel and guests can be totally independent, with their own dining room and sitting room with bookshelves and a fireplace as well of plenty of outside sitting space on the verandas.  Every room has its own style. African safari-antiques and Tanzanian arts and crafts dominate the room, without neglecting modern European comfort.

Food and service are of a high standard, with much of the produce grown in the 45-acre grounds. You can eat ina variety of places, such as the dining terrace, dining rooms, in the garden ... pretty well where you like.

There is a good size swimming pool with stunning views of the valleys, set in the extensive gardens. Guests can walk beneath the avocado and eucalyptus trees and listen to the voices of over 40 different kinds of domestic birds.

Plantation Lodge is located on the outskirts of Karatu on the lower slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater. It is a lovely base from which to enjoy the Crater, being only about 30 minutes drive away.

Pricing guidelines for Tanzania

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Tanzania can combine easily with other East African countries.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
£

  £50 to £150

  £150 to £300

As we sat at a table on the lawn having lunch it felt as if we were house guests of someone with a very lovely farm in the Ngorongoro foothills. The food was delicious, the place is stylish in every way, the staff attentive and the rooms are a cool, elegant and airy retreat. The obvious personal touches come from the fact that the owner still lives here much of the time, so really that feeling of being a house guest is kind of based on reality! Highly recommended.

Plantation Lodge is a short drive out from Karatu town and seems to be sitting in it is own little square of green oasis!  The gardens and pool are lovely.  The place feels very 'homes and gardens'.  If you like colonial elegance then this is a great place.
