About Lemala Ngorongoro

  • Close Panel

This Lemala camp is a good quality intimate seasonal camp offering accommodation in only 9 tents (including 1 family tent) in seclusion in a stunning acacia forest on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. There are no views into the Crater from here, but that doesn't mean this isn't a great spot.

Being in a conservation area the company cannot choose where it places the tents. They are reasonably close together, but not annoyingly so. They are very well-furnished with large twin or double beds with thick mattresses and cosy duvets. The floors are covered with rugs, there is solar lighting, and there is an en-suite bathroom consisting of bucket show cubicle (plenty hot water will be provided for you), wash basin and flush loo. Each tent has a gas heater since it can get really chilly here especially between July and September.

The mess tent is also very comfortable, and in the evening guests gather at the campfire for sundowner drinks and share stories about their day.

Lemala Camp has close links with the local Maasai community who can provide educational talks in camp about the conservation area. The camp, as well as having close access to the Ngorogoro Crater, is a good base for exploring the Ngorongoro Highlands in general with Empakai and Olmoti Crater within reach of day trips and walks into these craters with armed rangers.

Pricing guidelines for Tanzania

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Tanzania can combine easily with other East African countries.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

  £50 to £150

This seasonal camp is on the Crater rim, but please don't expect a view into the Crater or you'll be disappointed. That said, it's a lovely forested campsite amongst some beautiful trees. (Note: all seasonal camps can change campsites from time to time). It can get very chilly up here (particularly July to September) but the tents have gas heaters, and hot water bottles come as standard! The dining/lounge tent struck me as being quite small for the number of tents, but otherwise I thought it was a comfortable place with a nice position. You're paying (quite a lot!) for privacy and personal service here.

Lemala camps are gorgeous!  I visited this one at the crater whilst actually staying at the Sopa Lodge - I wish I'd stayed here instead!  Unfortunately I was not well at the time so didn't eat much of the gorgeous dinner they cooked for me, but the food was superb. The rooms are massive and really comfortable.  The only thing I would say to be careful of is don't choose this for it's location on the crater rim - there are no views into the crater as it's in the trees on the wall of the crater, not on the top.  But it's right on the Lemala access road into the crater so a good position.
