About Gibbs Farm

  • Close Panel

Established in the late 1920s as a coffee farm, Gibb's Farm has retained the charm of life in East Africa during that era. It is five kilometres from the village of Karatu, at the entrance to the Ngorongoro Highlands, midway between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater. Gibb's Farm commands spectacular views of the surrounding farmlands, and the forested slopes to the rear are home to an abundance of wildlife, including elephant and leopard.

Gibb's has 17 gorgeous farm cottages, all set among the gardens. The term 'farm cottage' doesn't quite do justice to these rooms though!  All built in the last few years, they are huge, superbly furnished and decorated, with a fireplace, great bathrooms (indoor and outdoor showers), and a very good eye for detail. You will have everything you need.

The main facilities - a sitting room, reading room, dining room, internet café, bar and gift shop - are situated in the old farmhouse. The old colonial farmhouse still has the character of a well cared for private house with roaring fires and friendly service, and guests wake up to fresh coffee, a multitude of flowers and breathtaking views.

The fruit, vegetable and flower gardens now cover 10 acres and everything is grown organically using only natural fertiliser from the farm. The farm provides the milk, coffee, eggs and meat which are served to guests, and the meals are truly superb. In the shadow of the forest there is a tree nursery where hundreds of young saplings are grown to encourage the use of native tree species in the local villages.

Gibb's offers a wide range of activities, from an African Spa to great walks in the region, and of course you're not far away from the Ngorongoro Crater, so there's plenty to keep you occupied during your stay here.

Gibb's Farm is one of the most expensive options in the Karatu/Ngorongoro region. However if you fancy a treat, and that feeling of almost staying in piece of local history, and some of the best food in Tanzania, you will love it.

Best time

Gibbs is good at any time of year. The main reason to stay here is its proximity (about 40 mins drive) from the Ngorongoro Crater. The Crater is really is a year-round destination, though the rainy season (April-May) is a bit of a struggle. In the winter months (July-Sept) it will be chilly, but they keep you cosy through fires and hot water bottles. In the rainy season, brollies abound!

Inclusions

A stay is usually based on half board, though full board and B&B is also available.

Meals

Meals are taken at individual table per couple or party. The food is one of the highlights of a stay at Gibbs. Mostly fresh from their own farm, the meals are varied and interesting, and there are always plentiful vegetable and salads, and freshly home-baked breads. They're great at puddings too. I hope the rhubarb crumble is on when you visit! They have a decent wine list. High tea is at about 4-5pm. Enjoy tea, small sandwiches (crusts cut off!) and cakes on the lawn or terrace. Very civilised.

Pricing guidelines for Tanzania

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Tanzania can combine easily with other East African countries.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
£

  £50 to £150

Tribes Advisor

I last stayed here 6 years ago with my family. Since then the place has been refurbished a lot and all the rooms have been completely altered and upgraded. And so has the price! I wondered if they might have lost the wonderful feeling of the old Gibbs Farm. They haven't. This tranquil haven makes you feel relaxed as soon as you arrive. It feels like a piece of English colonial past (including high tea on the lawn - included!), but the rooms are huge and modern. The food is hard to beat, and there are lots of things you can do from the lodge to really get to know and enjoy the area. Gibbs is not a cheap option, but it is very, very nice!

Amanda Marks, Tribes MD, stayed here March 2012

Gibbs Farm is one of the oldest 'guest farms' in the highlands and has beautiful gardens and a setting. However, it did feel a bit 'dated', the furnishings are very old fashioned and the rooms feel a bit sparse!  It's quite expensive compared to some other places in the area - though it's better if you stay a few nights and do some local walks from there.  For an overnight stop then there are plenty of nearby options these days.
