About Chole Mjini

  • Close Panel

Chole Mjini is a unique destination. The treehouses and groundhouse offer simple, rustic accommodation on Mafia Island some 100kms south of Zanzibar. Staying here guests have the opportunity to explore the island, visit local villages, dive, snorkel and sunbathe on sandbars, returning in time to enjoy sundowners in the bar. Chole Mjini can accommodate a maximum of 23 guests, so has an intimate atmosphere.

This is a real island hideaway. The 6 treehouses are set on thatched platforms in large baobab trees, open to the cool sea breezes and with views of the sea. Each treehouse has a king-size bed and most have a second level to accommodate children. They are set well apart to ensure privacy. The private bathing area is located at the base of the tree, in the treehouse's own garden and includes an open air shower and composting toilet. There is plenty of hot water. The large groundhouse is ideal for families with young children or anyone not keen on the idea of sleeping in a treehouse. It is built on several levels and has an ensuite bathroom with a sunken mosaic bath. There is a large private garden. Accommodation at Chole is comfortable but rustic rather than luxurious. Creature comforts of the 21st century, such as air conditioning, TV, electricity, are not to be found here, so this may not be for all tastes, but for those wth a spirit of adventure and desire to sample island life, this is the perfect location.

The main banda houses the lounge, dining area and bar. There are day beds and cushions in the lounge, where guests can browse through books and magazines or play board games, while enjoying the 270 degree sea views. This is also an ideal spot to watch the sunset. The rooftop bar serves a range of soft and alcoholic drinks.

Dinner is usually served outdoors, either within the atmospheric ruins or by the sea. The table is lit by candles. The food has a stong Swahili influence, using a range of spices to produce intense but delicate flavours. Locally caught fish is delivered daily and figures prominently on the menu and the vegetables are all grown on the island.

There are many activities to be enjoyed at Chole. Diving and snorkelling are excellent. Mafia Island Marine Park has some of the most unspoilt coral reefs in the world. For pure relaxation , guests can be taken to a nearby sandbar for a day's sunbathing and swimming, complete with picnic lunch and refreshments, collected in time to enjoy a sundowner back at the bar. Chole has strong links with the local community so village visits are encouraged. There are also opportunities to visit neighbouring islands, go fishing, bird watching, swim with whale sharks (November to mid-April) and watch turtles hatching (July to November). Sunset dhow cruises are also popular. Relax and enjoy the pace of island life!

Pricing guidelines for Tanzania

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Tanzania can combine easily with other East African countries.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
£

  £50 to £150

  £150 to £300

  £300 to £500

This is one of my favourite places in Africa!  We stayed at Chole for three nights (for an important birthday!) so found ourselves easily adjusting to the slow pace of life.  Wandering around Chole island and talking to the villagers was a wonderful experience, it's evident how much the lodge is accepted as part of the island and the village benefits from people staying here - but it's not touristy in the slightest.  OK, so mobile phone signal has made the island a little closer to civilsation these days, but if you took that out of the equation, you could easily be in a time warp and enjoying the Tanzania of 100 years ago.

Sleeping at tree canopy level looking out at the stars over the ocean and feeling the breeze wafting through the mossie net is a 'must do' experience.  Add to this magic the fresh home cooked food and cold wine, candlelight and the smell of flowers in the night and you'll never want to come home .... If you need running water and hairdryers then stay away, but if you enjoy Africa as nature intended then what are you waiting for?
