Speke Bay Lodge is just 15 km from the Serengeti National Park at it's western side and north of Mwanza by about 125 km. John Hanning Speke was a famous explorer who in 1858 claimed Lake Victoria to be the source of the river Nile. Speke Bay is named after him.
The lodge with it's 8 thatched cottage rooms stretched along the shores of the lake look like a little village, with all the buildings painted white with grass thatched roofs in the style of the local Sukuma tribe.
This is a great place to start or end a safari and the lodge is only 15km from the western side of the Serengeti National Park. Activities here can include boat trips on the lake, canoeing, visits to local fishing villages, try fishing for Tilapia or the famous Nile Perch, take a ride on the lodge's mountain bikes, enjoy nature walks around the 100 hectares of savannah land where there is great bird watching or simply relax in the tranquil setting and unwind!
The rooms are all en-suite with soap, towels and bottled water provided. They all have mossie nets and spray and are fitted with fans. Each cottage looks over the lake and has a verandah where you are served breakfast. There is a bar and restaurant and small gift shop. Much of the menu consists of locally caught fish and home grown vegetables.
