Gombe Chimp Safari

Gombe Stream National Park is a forest reserve set on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, the longest freshwater lake in the world. This reserve is well known due to the pioneering research of Dr Jane Goodall. The highlight of this five day chimpanzee safari is encountering the wild chimpanzees - surely one of the most exhilarating experiences of the natural world, and one which few people are privileged to see.

Itinerary

Duration: 5 days (other lengths of trip available too)

  1. Day 1:  Fly from Arusha, arrive in Kigoma. Kigoma Hilltop Hotel. (D)
  2. Days 2-4:  Morning boat transfer (2 hrs) to Gombe. Since you can never be sure exactly how long it will take to find the chimps there is no fixed itinerary for your safari in the park. Typically you may track chimps in the morning perhaps returning for a late lunch in the afternoon, and then spend the rest of the day near the camp, observing the baboon families or just relaxing on the beach. Highlights of the park include Jane’s peak - a hilltop from which there are stunning views over the lake and the park itself, and Kakombe Waterfall - a secluded waterfall in the heart of the jungle where you might even be lucky enough to see the chimps. You stay at Gombe Tented Camp. (FB)
  3. Day 5:  Transfer back to Kigoma, in time for flight back to Arusha at about 13:00hrs. (B)

Pricing guidelines for Tanzania

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Tanzania can combine easily with other East African countries.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
£

  £50 to £150

  £150 to £300
