People & Wildlife of Tanzania & Zanzibar

This African safari brings you into contact with the people of Tanzania, to share, learn and gain insights into Maasai, Chagga, Mangati (Barabaig), Iraqw (Mbulu) and Hadzabe cultures, as well as Swahili-speaking peoples of Zanzibar. You will also see the most spectacular gameviewing areas and enjoy the stunning spice islands of Zanzibar.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1:
    Arrive at Kilimanjaro airport. Drive to West Kilimanjaro. (D)
  2. Day 2:
    Gameviewing based at West Kilimanjaro camp with Maasai guides. (FB)
  3. Day 3:
    After breakfast, drive to the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro to the Chagga community project of Kahawa Shamba - see Trip Planner for more details. Walks and optional riding. (FB)
  4. Day 4:
    Drive to the southern shores of Lake Manyara to visit the pastoralist Barabaig people. Short afternoon game drive in Lake Manyara. Kirurumu Tented Lodge. (FB)
  5. Day 5:
    Early morning ethnobotanical walk with a Maasai guide, including a visit to an Iraqw dwelling. Drive to Lake Eyasi, home of the Hadzabe tribe. Overnight Kisima Lodge. (FB)
  6. Day 6:
    Hike into the Ngogongoro Conservation area with your Maasai guides, passing Hadzabe and Datoga dwellings. Then up the Eyasi Rift towards the highlands. Some parts are steep, but give great views of Eyasi. At the top, near Mt Makarot, you travel by jeep to your lodge on the Crater. (FB)
  7. Day 7:
    Morning’s game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater. In the afternoon, drive to the Serengeti, stopping at Olduvai Gorge on the way. Game drive through to Serengeti. Serena Lodge. (FB)
  8. Days 8-9:
    Gameviewing in the Serengeti. Serena Lodge. (FB)
  9. Day 10:
    Fly from Seronera to Arusha in time for the midday flight to Zanzibar. Transfer to the coast, Pongwe. B,D
  10. Days 11-13:
    At Pongwe on the coast. B,D.
  11. Day 14:
    Transfer to Stone Town, taking in a Spice tour on the way. Afternoon free in Stone Town. Dhow Palace. B
  12. Day 15:
    Transfer to the airport for your flight home. B

Available year round, but you will probably want to avoid the short rains in November and December, and certainly the longer rains from March to May.
