Loliondo is a private wilderness area of about 200km² situated to the north east of the Serengeti, and which forms an intrinsic part of the Serengeti ecosystem. Loliondo is in fact a Maasai community owned area of land, which is now being used in partnership with a private safari company to offer exclusive safari and trekking options in this beautiful region.
This is a wonderful example of a community ecotourism partnership which not only offer clients privileged safari options, but also helps with conservation of the area, plus brings an income to help this Maasai community. The area is a mixture of grassy plains, acacia woodland and rocky outcrops or kopjes which are natural vantage points from which wildlife can be spotted and in whose shadow we camp out of the wind and sun.
We roam through this unspoiled landscape walking or driving from kopje to kopje seeing spoor of game and flushing out spur fowl from the grass and bush. We can follow valleys and streams catching glimpses of animals at the waterholes. This is quintessential Africa, the experience of a lifetime. The Maasai are our companions and guides, and they are an indispensable part of the trek or safari.
