Itinerary

  1. Day 1:
Moshi. Overnight at the Keys Hotel. This evening or the next morning you will be briefed on your climb.
  2. Day 2:
Kahawa Shamba. You will be transferred to the foothills of Kilimanjaro to Kahawa Shamba. Self-sufficient smallholders farm coffee and bananas here and you will have guided walks of the area and visit the village. You overnight in Chagga hut.
  3. Day 3:
To Machame Hut, 3000m. After being transferred to the park gate you start the 5 hour walk through the lush rainforest to Machame Hut.
  4. Day 4:
To Shira Cave, 3800m. After a steep hike  you enjoy a more gentle climb for about 2 hours through lower moorlands. After lunch descend 50 feet then climb to Shira Cathedral and your camp.
  5. Day 5:
To Barranco Wall, 3900m. Climb slowly for about 5kms, with the terrain becoming increasingly barren. This is a fairly long and strenuous day, as you will now start to notice the altitude. Total trekking time today is aprrox. 8 hours.
  6. Day 6:
To Karanga, 4100m. After the initial steep climb of Barranco Wall, you cross scree slopes and ridges to Karanga with breathtaking views of the West Breach and southern glacier. You should reach the camp by lunchtime, leaving the afternoon free for relaxation and acclimatisation.
  7. Day 7:
To Barafu Camp, 4600m. This is a relatively short trek, again allowing time for rest and acclimatisation before tomorrow's trek to the summit.
  8. Day 8:
Barafu to Uhuru, 5895m, then descend to Mweka, 3100m. You wake at around midnight for the torchlight climb to Stella Point (about 7 hours, with frequent rest stops). Continue along the crater edge to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, arriving around dawn. After taking in the stunning views of glaciers and plains of Africa below, start the descent to Mweka or High Camp, arriving late afternoon.
  9. Day 9:
To Moshi. Descend to Mweka Village, about a 4 hour walk, where you are met and transferred back to the Keys Hotel.
  10. Day 10:
Transfer to airport for your onward or return flight.

Is it for you?

All Kilimanjaro treks are challenging and you need a good level of fitness. We use tents rather than the huts on this trek as we find they provide you with a better night's sleep (less disturbance) and more comfort than the huts which are in bad repair. You will need to prepare for very variable temperatures, from hot to extremely cold.

Best times to go

Kilimanjaro can be trekked all year, with advantages and disadvantages each month. See below for details.
