Gombe Chimp Safari

Gombe Stream National Park is a forest reserve set on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, the longest freshwater lake in the world. This reserve is well known due to the pioneering research of Dr Jane Goodall. The highlight of this five day chimpanzee safari is encountering the wild chimpanzees - surely one of the most exhilarating experiences of the natural world, and one which few people are privileged to see.

Trip highlights

  • Encounter chimpanzees in the wild.
  • Stunning scenery of Gombe Strem National Park.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1:  Fly from Arusha, arrive in Kigoma. Kigoma Hilltop Hotel. (D)
  2. Days 2-4:  Morning boat transfer (2 hrs) to Gombe. Since you can never be sure exactly how long it will take to find the chimps there is no fixed itinerary for your safari in the park. Typically you may track chimps in the morning perhaps returning for a late lunch in the afternoon, and then spend the rest of the day near the camp, observing the baboon families or just relaxing on the beach. Highlights of the park include Jane’s peak - a hilltop from which there are stunning views over the lake and the park itself, and Kakombe Waterfall - a secluded waterfall in the heart of the jungle where you might even be lucky enough to see the chimps. You stay at Gombe Tented Camp. (FB)
  3. Day 5:  Transfer back to Kigoma, in time for flight back to Arusha at about 13:00hrs. (B)

Price

2008: From £1655 per person based on twinshare accommodation. 2009: From £1845 per person based on twinshare accommodation. These prices do not include flights.

Is it for you?

This is a reasonably challenging trip, as during chimp- tracking you may have to climb steep hills for a few hours. A good level of fitness is recommended. Chimps are sometimes seen close to the camp and near beaches, but this cannot be guaranteed. Children aged 9 yrs and above are allowed to trek the chimps.

Best times to go

This chimp safari is available all year though you may find it too wet for comfort in the rainy season.
