About Tembo House Hotel

  • Close Panel
Situated on the picturesque seafront of Stone Town, and just a few minutes' walk from its bustling centre, Tembo House Hotel is a fine old Arab building that has served a number of purposes. For many years it was the American Consultate and, in 1884, it become the premises of Cowasjee Dinshaw and Partner, a famous Trading Company in the western Indian Ocean. Whilst a modern wing has been added, the older part of the building has retained a great deal of its character and historic features.

Tembo House Hotel is set in an ideal location for relaxing after a day's sightseeing. The ll guest rooms are spacious, and well decorated, with Oriental and traditional Zanzibari ornaments, antiques and furniture. Facilities include air conditioning, telephone, mini-bar, multi-channel television and en-suite bathroom. Most of the rooms have balconies overlooking the beach or the swimming pool courtyard. The swimming pool and Tembo House''s convenient location make it a good choice for families.

The Bahari Restaurant offers excellent local and international cuisine. It should be noted, however, that Tembo House Hotel is one of just two hotels in Stone Town that do not allow alcohol to be consumed on the premises; something that used to be the norm on the island.

There is a souvenir shop, offering a range of gifts and curio items, and there is an Internet cafeé.

Tembo House Hotel is a ten minute drive from the airport.

Activities include exploring the winding alleys, bazaars, and ancient buildings of Stone Town (recently made a World Heritage Site), swimming in the fine pool or on the wide beach. Marine sports, picnics and spice tours can also be arranged.

Pricing guidelines for Tanzania

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Tanzania can combine easily with other East African countries.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
£

  £50 to £150

££

  £150 to £300

£££

  £300 to £500

The pool in the central feature of this hotel and there is an old, and a new wing built on either side of it. The older rooms are quite dated, so make sure you stay on the newer side. I think that its close proximity to the port doesnt do it any favours, but its close to the hustle and bustle of the town which is a plus!

Be careful which room you get in this hotel as some are MUCH nicer than others!  It's one of only a few hotels in Stone Town with a pool (as you can't really swim from the beach - or wouldn't want to! - in the harbour waters.  Very centrally located in the heart of the shops and restaurants it's a great location.  But beware it's a 'dry hotel' so don't stay there if you want a bar!
