About Tarangire Safari Lodge

  • Close Panel

Tarangire Safari Lodge is superbly located in Tarangire National Park, set on top of a high bluff with a breathtaking panorama. Below the lodge flows Tarangire River, a favourite watering place, which attracts impressive numbers and variety of game, allowing guests to appreciate Tarangire's diverse wildlife before even leaving the lodge. Large herds of elephants have been viewed from the verandah at the lodge. Particularly towards the end of the dry season (September to November), animals from the surrounding ecosystem concentrate in large numbers near the Tarangire River, the only permanent water source in the area.

Accommodation at Tarangire Safari Lodge is in 35 twin tents & 5 chalet bungalows that combine the authentic safari atmosphere with more modern comforts. They are basic but comfortable; built on a solid base, with a thatched roof, screened windows, electric light and en suite stone-walled bathrooms with solar-heated shower and flush toilet. Each tent has a small veranda, two comfortable single beds and a writing table and chair. The honeymoon suite is situated near a secluded overlook of the river and is furnished with a large double bed made of old dhow wood.

There are also a few thatched bungalows if you prefer solid walls. They remain cool in the heat of the day, and the rooms are simply but tastefully furnished and spacious, light and airy. Electric lights and sockets are powered by the camp generator (220V). Each bungalow bedroom has a double and a single bed, providing enough room to accommodate three adults, or a small family comfortably. The bathroom is spacious and bright with a large shower and plenty of solar heated water. In front of each bungalow is a smaller thatched area with folding safari chairs and a table, which serves as the veranda.

The lounge and dining area at Tarangire Safari Lodge have high thatched roofs, with open sides that allow uninterrupted views of the landscape and wildlife. The cuisine is international, using fresh local ingredients and a hint of African spices. The lounge area has oversized armchairs made from old Zanzibari dhow boats, which make a perfect place to relax in the evenings. Those wanting something a bit more active can take a dip in the pool, a bird walk around the lodge grounds or hunt for souvenirs in the Baobab boutique.

Tarangire Safari Lodge is situated inside Tarangire National Park in the north of Tanzania. From Arusha town, the drive is around 2 hours (120 km) on a good tarmac road. A light aircraft can be chartered to fly into the Park. Tarangire Safari Lodge is just 10km away from the park airstrip.

Pricing guidelines for Tanzania

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Tanzania can combine easily with other East African countries.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
£

  £50 to £150

Sitting on the huge verandah overlooking the Tarangire River below, G&T in hand. What a way to end a day on safari in this often underestimated park. You don't come here for fancy accommodation or an intimate, personal lodge experience, but if you want a decent standard tented room, in a good position, with a great view, run by friendly people, Tarangire Safari Lodge could be just the place for you.

Amanda Marks, Tribes MD, visited here March 2012

The location of this lodge is stunning and the views in the dry season over the river full of elephants is great.  However, it's big and busy and the rooms (especially the tents) are very close together!  It's centrally located so convient for short stays but it does attract quite a few large groups, so if you are looking for a quiet, personal experience then it's not the place for you. It's good for families.
