About Ras Nungwi

  • Close Panel

Located on an expanse of beautiful beach wilderness on the northern tip of Zanzibar, and protected by a coral reef, Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel is an ideal location for all forms of watersport, or merely relaxing in the temperate water while soaking up the equatorial sun. Ras Nungwi is built from hand-cut fossilised coral limestone and other natural materials such as palm leaf roofing, and literally blends into the landscape. An eco-sensitive approach has ensured that the delicate balance of the land and sea flora and fauna have been preserved.

All 32 rooms at Ras Nungwi are tastefully furnished, with hand-crafted four poster beds and indigenous décor, and all have en-suite facilities and balconies. Mosquito nets over all beds ensure a peaceful night's sleep, with the sound of the ocean rounding off a relaxing day in paradise. Lodge rooms have a garden view and all types of chalet room have a sea view, with proximity to the ocean being closer the higher the category. Superior chalet rooms have air-conditioning, rather than the standard ceiling fan, while four superior deluxe chalet rooms also have a mini-bar, CD-player and other special extras.

The Zanzibari chefs are renowned for sumptuous seafood buffets and spicy island fare, all freshly prepared. From calamari and coconut curries to freshly grilled line fish, they'll keep your tastebuds alive whilst ensuring a healthy diet. Breakfasts are traditionally centred around the variety of freshly prepared pastries and local fruits. Lunches are light and appetising, and dinners are seasonally characterised by huge buffets and fresh fish barbecues in the open-air restaurant.

The unspoilt beach at Ras Nungwi is one of the best on Zanzibar, and the nearby coral reef yields a beautiful lagoon. Low tides reveal sparkling white coral sand bars, and rock pools teeming with marine life. The main beach area allows easy access to the hotel's swimming pool, watersports centre (snorkelling, water-skiing, windsurfing, traditional sailing dhow cruises, deep sea fishing, kayaking) and masseuse. The nearby coral reefs offer superb diving. Beach attendants are on hand to provide you with towels, sunloungers and refreshments from the bar. The hotel's deck-level freshwater swimming pool commands stunning views of the Indian Ocean.

Pricing guidelines for Tanzania

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Tanzania can combine easily with other East African countries.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

  £50 to £150

The is a great hotel with all the mod cons, lovely staff and great food. This is THE place on Zanzibar for stunning sunsets and sunrises. This is probably the best large hotel I’ve stayed in on Zanzibar. Nugwi has the best beaches and a reputation for being backpacker focussed however, Ras Nugwi is away from the hustle and bustle and you can walk freely on the beach without being hassled.

Hannah, Africa Travel Co-ordinator. Stayed here May 2009

Ras Nungwi was one of the first high quality hotels on Zanzibar and I've visitied a few times.  It's still a good value hotel but not as luxurious as some of the other, newer places.  The position is great for the beach and Mnemba Atoll, but not great if you want to explore the rest of Zanzibar as it's quite isolated right up on the northern tip of the island. It's a good family location with plenty to do.
