About Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge

  • Close Panel

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge is located on Lemala Hill on the uppermost, eastern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, a World Heritage Site, in the volcanic highlands of northern Tanzania. The Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge is, and will remain as, the only tourist development on the eastern rim of the crater and thus offers unique and spectacular views down into the crater floor and of the sunsets over the western horizon. Another major advantage of this site is the fact that Crater safaris can begin within five minutes of leaving the lodge.

Opened in 1992, the lodge can accommodate 190 guests in 92 suites, each with central heating, a private lounge with mini bar, a bedroom with two queen size beds and ample room for a third, an en-suite bathroom with shaver sockets and a hair dryer, and a private solarium which offers stunning views either down into the crater floor below or of the setting sun over the western horizon.

The lodge has direct-dial satellite telephone facilities as well as satellite television and wildlife-video-film options. A number of lodge electrical generating systems provide 240volts, 50 cycles 24 hours a day. Complimentary bottled mineral water is provided in the mini bars.

The Lodge welcomes children of all ages and can provide both special meals at convenient times and baby sitters on request. The guest shops stock a wide selection of curios, gift items, clothing, film, sweets, postcards, personal requisites and toiletries.

The swimming pool is situated on the very edge of the crater itself and the water is bracing at any time of year.

Pricing guidelines for Tanzania

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Tanzania can combine easily with other East African countries.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
£

  £50 to £150

  £150 to £300

  £300 to £500

I've stayed here a few times (ten years between visits!) and it's not changed a bit over the years!  The hotel as a whole is nothing special as it's very large, used by lots of bus tours and food is generally buffet style.  However, it's the best option on the crater rim as it's on the opposite side to the other lodges and right next to the Lemala gate and access road, giving guests here a head start in the morning to get straight down to the crater floor!  When I visited the manageress here was really lovely which made my stay more enjoyable.  The rooms are huge and have great views into the crater, but the water is a bit erratic and the walls paper thin, so be careful what you are saying about your neighbours!!  It's worth staying here just for the view.
