About Mwagusi Safari Camp

  • Close Panel

Mwagusi Safari camp is a small exclusive tented camp on a bank of the Mwagusi Sand River in Ruaha National Park. It offers high quality accommodation, food and wildlife viewing.

Mwagusi Camp has 13 tents within traditional thatched bandas, each comfortably furnished with high density mattresses, dressing table, wardrobe, luggage racks and safari chairs all built in the traditional style of the camp. Each banda has an ensuite bathroom with flush loo and hot shower. At the front of each banda is a large covered veranda with a table and armchairs made from local materials, and superb game viewing can be experienced from the seclusion of these verandas. Solar powered lights as well as a number of traditional hurricane lamps provide lighting.

The writer John Hemmingway once wrote that Mwagusi Camp is designed as a "boy's fantasy of independence" along the lines of a traditional old-style African safari experience.

Renowned for its high calibre of local Tanzanian guides and their in-depth knowledge of the African bush, Mwagusi offers guests rewarding, quality wildlife guiding with plenty of opportunities for game drives and walks throughout the area. Mwagusi Camp has specially adapted open-sided 4WD vehicles, each with comfortable seats and high shade awning to enable guests to stand and still be in the shade whilst game viewing. Each vehicle is equipped with reference books and bean bags for photography, medikits and all the necessities for a day in the bush. They also carry radios for communication with the camp. Walking safaris , accompanied by an experienced guide, or viewing by vehicle without the disturbance of lots of other vehicles is one of the main attractions of Mwagusi's safari adventure.

Mwagusi Camp has strong links with local communities. Many of the camp's staff are local and the camp is actively involved in the building and staffing of an orphange for children of AIDs victims and in making improvements to local schools and clinics.

Pricing guidelines for Tanzania

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Tanzania can combine easily with other East African countries.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

  £50 to £150

This is a well established well run camp, with permanent ‘bandas’ rather than canvas tents which are very spacious under a thatch roof. Mwagusi is a great place with a good vibe and caters well for children. The main focus is on the river bed again with lots of passing wildlife. The food here is great, and they are really flexiblt on activities and meal times, so it really is a case of what suits you best! Mwagusi is perfect for people who are a bit cautious about being under canvass out in the bush.

Hannah, Africa Travel Co-ordinator. Visited June 2009

This camp feels like the 'house of straw the little pigs built!  But inside the straw rooms are huge tented structures.  The decor was a bit gaudy for my liking, but the atmosphere and guiding is great, their vehicles very comfortable and it's in a superb game viewing area.  If you want rustic accommoation but with the feel of a 'lodge', then this is perfect.
