Makoa Farm is an old coffee estate that has been lovingly restored and now incorporates an intimate small lodge set within a fully working 358-acre coffee farm in the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro. The farm is near Kilimanjaro's Machame Gate with access to the spectacular rainforest on the mountain's lower slopes. The area is home to the Chagga people whose small villages and coffee farms dot the hillsides. Much of the farmland is devoted to conservation, and there is excellent birdlife, while monkeys, small antelope and nocturnal game abound.
There are two cottages, each with a private veranda and stunning views of Mt. Kilimanjaro, a guesthouse suitable for families and a comfortable ensuite guest bedroom in the colonial style farmhouse.
Makoa-Farm is particularly popular as a base for horse riding safaris and horseback trail rides –the hosts (who are vets) were previously professional Endurance riders. Two types of itineraries can be organised: half-day to eight-day horseriding trips on the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro with different rides each day (suitable for riders of any level of experience), and horseback riding safaris and African trail rides –multi-day safaris designed to allow intermediate to advanced riders to experience the African outback.
In addition to 22 horses, Makoa-Farm is home to a variety of animals such as Suzi and Hugo - the pet pigs - cattle, rabbits and guinea pigs and different kinds of poultry and fowl, and the occasional African Verreaux Eagle Owl spends time as an in-patient in the animal hospital.
Makoa-Farm is a 45 minute drive from Arusha, 20 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport and 20 minutes from the old German town of Moshi.
Activities: Horseback safaris (half-day up to eight days), 4x4 excursions to local hot springs, visits to local coffee estates, Maasai market and the Masailand.
