  2. Robben Island

Known particularly for its famous prison inmate, Nelson Mandela, Robben Island is now one of South Africa’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The barren island is 12 km off the coast of Cape Town, and for about 400 years it was used as a prison island, as well as a military base.

  3. Soweto

Famous or notorious, Soweto is a former township from the times of apartheid. It is about 15 km away from the centre of Johannesburg, and about two million people live here in a collection of houses ranging from tin shacks to houses of the more affluent in better suburbs.

  4. Table Mountain

Table Mountain is one of Cape Town (and South Africa’s) most famous landmarks. It is a sandstone plateau which is 1085m at its highest point (Maclears Beacon).
