Hermanus grew from an old fishing village to being known as one of the best places for viewing whales. From the rocky cliffs these magnificent animals can be seen from as close as 10 metres away. From June to November when the Southern Right Whales migrate through and have their young in the may, hundreds of people on the shores are alerted by the 'whale cryer' as to their whereabouts.
Hermanus also has a lovely surrounding area of sandy beaches and dramatic cliff paths, perfect walking country and hiking to the nearby nature reserves of Fernkloof and Frans Senakal. The largest carnivorous plant in the world, the vlieebos, grows at Fernkloof. Birding here includes mountain, coastal, river and estuarine species.
This is still very much a fishing town and you can watch the trawlers bringing in their catches at the New Harbour. There is fresh fish for sale here if you are self catering. The Old Harbour is unchanged from the days when fishing was indeed the main activity here. It has a small museum with interesting information and artefacts.
Other activities in the area include horse riding, paragliding, kayaking, shark cage diving, fishing, hiking, plane trips and simply swimming and sunbathing at one of many gorgeous beaches. Another great pastime in Hermanus is shopping! An incredible selection of galleries, fashion boutiques, jewellery shops and many others are all located near the centre of town within walking distance. There are some interesting food and craft markets too - ask locally for dates and details.
