About Hazel's Homestays

  • Close Panel

Hazel's Homestays is run by Hazel, a retired teacher who with 11 other multi-ethnic, well-educated ladies form Hazel's Homestays. These are homes not hotels, so guests staying here will get an insight into what it is like to stay with a local, non-white family, something which is not commonly possible in South Africa. These families were all discriminated against under apartheid, and it is only by Hazel's strong will that this homestay project has got off the ground at all, as the families still find that they cannot compete in general with the white-owned guest houses. Accommodation is in en-suite bedrooms.

There are several attractions are within close proximity. The Cango Caves with its beautiful rock formations and vast caverns, the Cango wildlife ranch which boasts cheetahs, wild wild dogs and the rare white tiger, the Ostrich Show Farms which give an insight into the history of the ostrich and the industry that put Oudshoorn on the map. There are also curiosity shops for cultural paraphernalia.

Pricing guidelines for South Africa

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). South Africa combines well with Botswana, Mauritius and Mozambique.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
£

  £50 to £100
