About Tsitsikamma National Park

  • Close Panel

Tsitsikamma National Park is where the booming breakers of the Indian Ocean relentlessly pound rocky shores, where temperate high forest and fynbos roll down to the sea in an unspoilt verdant carpet, where ancient rivers carve their paths to the ocean down rocky ravines. This, "the place of much water", is the Tsitsikamma National Park.

The heartland of the park stretches some 5 km to sea, protecting a wonderland of inter-tidal life, reef and deep-sea fish. Dolphins frolic in the breakers, surfing and playing for the sheer joy of life, and the gentle giant of the ocean, the southern right whale visits here, coming inshore to breed.

There is a range of accommodation here -the self contained chalet accommodation is serviced daily and provided with bedding, towels and soap.

At Storms River Mouth Restcamp there are a variety of accommodation optinos: Forest Huts -communal facilities (2 beds); Forest Cabins (a.k.a. Dolphin Cabins) -self equipped units 2 beds); Chalets -self equipped detached open plan units (2 single beds and either bunk beds, bed in lounge or double sleeper couch); Oceanettes -self equipped detached units on the ocean edge (3 or 4 beds); Cottages -self equipped free standing units (3 beds); Family Cottages -larger version of above (4 beds) - 2 bedrooms; Honeymoon Cottages (double bed).

Activities from Storms River include the 'Spirit of Tsitsikamma' boat rides, the start of the Otter Trail (a 42km long 5 day hike), several nature trails, and marine and river activities, bathing at a small beach and a swimming pool for resident guests.

At Storms River there is a shop where souvenirs and basic commodities may be purchased, a restaurant which also serves snacks and drinks, a laundry room and information desk. Fuel is available at Storms River Bridge (±25km from Storms River Rest Camp in Tsitsikamma) and at Nature's Valley (adjacent Nature's Valley Rest Camp).

At Natures Valley (40km from Storms River) accommodation is more basic in two bed forest huts and shared ablutions which electricity as well as electric geysers in the ablutions. The forest huts are also fitted with a standard three point electric plug. Both sites also have camping facilities. Activities here include a network of 6 nature trails (2-6 hours - Bird watching), Board sailing, rowing, sailing and canoeing on the river (no powerboats), swimming at Nature's Valley beach (2 km from restcamp).

Pricing guidelines for South Africa

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). South Africa combines well with Botswana, Mauritius and Mozambique.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
£

  £50 to £100
