Situated on the Maputaland coast, Greater St Lucia Wetland Park is the largest estuarine lake system in Africa. It teems with birdlife (sea and freshwater birds) including pelicans and flamingoes as it is the southern destination of many migratory water birds of which there is a rich diversity in southern Africa (more than 130 species). There are around 800 hippos and 1200 Nile crocodiles in these waters as well as turtles, and of course many fish species in its shallow lakes, mangrove swamps and marshlands.
Guided boat tours provide wonderful sightings of the various animals and birds. St. Lucia also boasts long, pristine golden beaches, lapped by the warm waters of the Agulhas current, moving slowly south from Mozambique. Here you can go swimming, fishing and snorkelling.
Between the beaches and Lake St. Lucia are some of the world's highest vegetated dunes as well as swamp and sand forest. There are also walking trails, turtle tours, whale watching opportunities and horseback safaris
