About De Opstal

  • Close Panel

De Opstal Country Lodge consists of the original farm house, stables and milking parlour, all dating back to 1830, which have been tastefully restored and converted into ensuite guest accommodation complete with modern creature comforts. There is plenty for guests to do, from hiking, swimming beneath waterfalls to visiting local ostrich farms and stargazing at night.

De Opstal offers superior and luxury rooms, all of which retain their original features such as terracotta floors, heavy wooden doors and shutters, but combine these with modern amenities (air conditioning, tea and coffee making facilities, TV), to ensure a comfortable stay. Most rooms also have a private patio.

The farm buildings are set in a lovely garden. There is a salt water swimming pool where guests can relax. Each morning a generous farm-style breakfast is served in the restaurant. A la carte dinners are based on local Karoo cuisine, making good use of fresh local ingredients such as ostrich, venison, fish and vegetables. There is a comfortable loung and bar area where guests can enjoy pre- and post-prandial drinks. Picnic lunches can be requested by guests venturing out for the day. Friendly hosts Albertus and Matilde, an 8th generation Schoeman in the valley, are on hand to ensure a happy stay.

Outdoor activities are popular, such as hiking, touring ostrich farms, mountain biking and visitng waterfalls. Local attractions include the famous Cango Caves and the Swartberg Pass with its stunning views is just a short a drive away. Oudtshoorn offers a wide varierty of sports, including golf, tennis and squash.

Pricing guidelines for South Africa

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). South Africa combines well with Botswana, Mauritius and Mozambique.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

Situated on the road to the Cango Caves, De Opstal consists of restored Little Karoo farm buildings (dating back to 1830), creating old world ambience with subtle modern touches. I really liked the atmosphere here. It feels very English country farm house and homely, and there are lovely gardens too. This is a lovely country lodge in a good location for exploring the area.
