Kruger & Swaziland

This is a wonderful itinerary combining excellent game viewing in Kruger, Timbavati and Mkhaya Reserves, with sightseeing in the Blyde River Canyon region and a chance to get an insight into traditional Swazi culture.

Self driving you have the chance to stop and look at a variety of things that interest you and you can extend the trip if you want more time to explore this fascinating area. Guided game viewing is included at Gomo Gomo and in Swaziland.

Best time

This trip can be taken at any time of year. From October to March, KwaZulu Natal, Mpumalanga and Swaziland are hot and rainy. From April to September it is warm and dry.

Getting there

UK to Johannesburg flights take about 10.5 hours and cost from £500 plus taxes depending on the season.

Itinerary

  • Open Panel 

Duration: 7 days

  1. Day 1:
    Pick up car on arrival into Johannesburg Airport, drive to the Kruger area and Gomo Gomo Lodge in Timbavati Reserve (approx. 6 hours). If you arrive in time you can take an afternoon game drive (in lodge vehicle with guide). (FB)
  2. Day 2:
    Gameviewing based at Gomo Gomo. (FB)
  3. Day 3: 
    Travel through to Hazyview via sightseeing on the Panoramic Route. (B)
  4. Day 4:
    Head into Kruger National Park, gameviewing on your way to Berg-en-Dal restcamp, arriving late afternoon. When at the camp an open vehicle game drive or guided walks can be booked at reception. (RO)
  5. Day 5:
    Leave Kruger at Malelane Gate and travel south to Swaziland. You may want to allow time to explore the excellent Swazi Matsamo village at the border, before entering Swaziland. Please ensure you arrive by 16:00hrs at the pick-up point to enter Mkhaya Game Reserve. (FB)
  6. Day 6:
    Day’s game viewing at Mkhaya in lodge vehicles with a guide. (FB)
  7. Day 7:
    Leisurely drive back to Johannesburg to drop off your hire car and catch flight home or onwards. (B)

Pricing guidelines for South Africa

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). South Africa combines well with Botswana, Mauritius and Mozambique.

 
For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
