Best time

In the dry winter months from May to August wildlife tends to congregate at the waterholes. Nights can be cold. The vegetation can be dense in the rainy season from October to March, particularly in the south of the park.

Getting there

There are direct flights from Europe to Johannesburg (about 10 ½ hours direct) and sometimes Cape Town (about 11 hours direct). Return flights from the UK cost from about £500 plus taxes.

Duration: 5 days (or more or less)

National Park Restcamps only

Day 1: Depart from Johannesburg on a flight to Nelspruit or KMIA airport. Here, collect your hire car, and drive into Kruger, heading for your restcamp. (No meals)
Day 2: A day spent exploring the park in your own vehicle. Alternatively, the restcamps offer guided drives in open vehicles - bookable locally (about £15 pp). (No meals)
Day 3: Move to next restcamp. Game viewing as above. (No meals)
Day 4: Game viewing as above. (No meals)
Day 5: Travel back to the airport to drop hire car and fly out.

Gomo Gomo Game Lodge & Elephant Plains

Day 2: Full day at Gomo Gomo. Includes 2 game drives daily. (FB)

Day 3: After a morning game drive or walk, drive to the northern Sabi Sands and Elephant Plains Game Lodge. Game activities included here. (FB)

Day 4: Game viewing from Elephant Plains. (FB)

Day 5: Travel back to Johannesburg. Drop hire car and fly out, continue with onward arrangements. (B)

Elephant Plains & Nottens Bush Lodge

Day 2: Full day at Elephant Plains. Includes 2 game drives. (FB)

Day 1: Pick up your hire car at Johannesburg and drive to Kruger, heading for Rhino Post Camp close to Mala Mala. Pricing guidelines for South Africa

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). South Africa combines well with Botswana, Mauritius and Mozambique.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
