About Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

  • Close Panel

Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park is a large wildlife reserve and conservation area which straddles the border between South Africa and Botswana. It combines the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa and the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana, and covers about 3.6 million hectares. It is part of Kalahari desert, and as such it is an arid and unforgiving region of red sand dunes and dry riverbeds.

The lack of vegetation here means that spotting the wildlife here is actually quite easy. The area is known for its predators, such as the cheetah, leopard, hyena, and the famed black-maned lion.

There are seasonal movements of wildebeest, springbok, eland and red hartebeest, and ground squirrel and meerkats are common.
