The Amadiba Community invites you to experience a journey into the wilderness, landscape, culture and history of the beautiful Transkei Wild Coast. Interact directly with the people and the place as you cross 25kms of the coast on horse, by foot and in canoes. Whether you are a beginner or skilled rider, the horse trails are guided at a pace that encourages low impact on the natural environment whilst offering you the chance to absorb all that this incredible area has to offer. Facilities and services are provided and owned by self-employed individuals.

Itinerary
- Day 1:
Collect your hire car in Durban and drive south to Port Edward. Overnight guest house/hotel.
- Day 2:
Your first day is a 2½km walk to Mzamba River, then a 4 hr horse ride along unspoiled beaches and undulating hills dotted with Pondo tribe settlements. Kwanyana camp. (B,D)
- Day 3:
You ride through thick dune forest to the spectacular ‘red sands’, a phenomenal landscape. The ride continues over sandy beaches, rugged outcrops and green hills to the camp at Mtentu estuary. Cross Mtentu River by canoe for a hike in Mkambati Reserve. Explore a shipwreck from the 1970s and visit impressive waterfalls. Mtentu Camp. (FB)
- Day 4:
Canoe trip up one of South Africa’s most beautiful estuaries - Mtentu. Riverbanks are lined with thick forest. After about 1km paddlers leave the main river up a tributary to a large waterfall. Further up river you take a short scramble through a forested gorge to a cave used by sangomas. Later, maybe take a boulder-hopping hike up to a spectacular set of waterfalls. Kwanyana camp. (FB)
- Day 5:
Cross Mnyameni River and head inland to a spectacular series of waterfalls and natural pools. Then back to the beach for the final leg to the Mzamba River and Port Edward. Overnight inn/hotel. (B,L)

Travel back to Durban. (B)

Is it for you?
This is fine for anyone with average fitness, but you need to be comfortable with basic facilities, and for riding for up to 4 hours. Please ask if you'd like the feedback of a past client for this unusual trip.
Best times to go
This trip can be taken at any time of year. From October to March, KwaZulu Natal, Mpumalanga and Swaziland are hot and rainy. From April to September it is warm and dry.

Getting there
There are direct flights from Europe to Johannesburg (about 10 ½ hours direct) and sometimes Cape Town (about 11 hours direct). Return flights from the UK cost from about £500 plus taxes.
