A Kruger Experience

Here are a few ways in which to enjoy the incredible Kruger National Park within different budgets. The combinations are endless, but we feel each of these options offer a good experience.

Itinerary

National Park Restcamps only

  1. Day 1:  Depart from Johannesburg on a flight to Nelspruit or KMIA airport. Here, collect your hire car, and drive into Kruger, heading for your restcamp. (No meals)
  2. Day 2:  Day exploring the park in your own vehicle. Alternatively, the restcamps offer guided drives in open vehicles - bookable locally (about £15 pp). (No meals)
  3. Day 3:  Move to next restcamp. Game viewing as above. (No meals)
  4. Day 4:  Game viewing as above. (No meals)
  5. Day 5:  Travel back to the airport to drop hire car and fly out.

Gomo Gomo Game Lodge & Elephant Plains

  1. Day 1:  Pick up your hire car at Johannesburg airport and drive to Kruger, heading for Gomo Gomo Lodge in the Timbavati. (D)
  2. Day 2:  Full day at Gomo Gomo. Includes 2 game drives daily. (FB)
  3. Day 3:  After a morning game drive or walk, drive to the northern Sabi Sands and Elephant Plains Game Lodge. Game activities included here. (FB)
  4. Day 4:  Game viewing from Elephant Plains. (FB)
  5. Day 5:  Travel back to Johannesburg. Drop hire car and fly out, continue with onward arrangements. (B)

Elephant Plains & Nottens Bush Lodge

  1. Day 1: Pick up your hire car at Johannesburg airport and drive to Kruger, heading for Elephant Plains in the Sabi Sands. (D)
  2. Day 2:  Full day at Elephant Plains. Includes 2 game drives. (FB)
  3. Day 3:  After a morning game drive or walk, travel to Nottens Bush Camp. Game activities included . (FB)
  4. Day 4:  Game viewing from Nottens. (FB)
  5. Day 5:  Travel back to Johannesburg. Drop hire car and fly out, continue with onward arrangements. (B) 

Rhino Walking Safaris

  1. Day 1: Pick up your hire car at Johannesburg and drive to Kruger, heading for Rhino Post Camp close to Mala Mala. (D)
  2. Day 2: Full day at Rhino Post Camp. Includes 2 game drives. (FB)
  3. Day 3: After a morning game drive or walk, you will be transferred to Plains Camp. Game activities included . (FB)
  4. Day 4: Game viewing from Plains. (FB)
  5. Day 5: Travel back to Johannesburg. Drop hire car and fly out, continue with onward arrangements. (B)

Is it for you?

This is for anyone with a love of wildlife.

Best times to go

In the dry winter months from May to August wildlife tends to congregate at the waterholes. Nights can be cold. The vegetation can be dense in the rainy season from October to March, particularly in the south of the park.

Getting there

There are direct flights from Europe to Johannesburg (about 10 ½ hours direct) and sometimes Cape Town (about 11 hours direct). Return flights from the UK cost from about £500 plus taxes.

Kruger really has everything in terms of wildlife. For me it's fascinating because it's never the same, and there are so many different types of terrain here, you can even look for specific animals in specific areas.
