About Once Upon a Stove

  • Close Panel

Once Upon a Stove is a homestay in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch's largest township, owned and run by Lilian Ngwexana (also known as 'Mama Lily') who will share her fascinating lifestory with you whilst intoducing you to township life and culture. You also have the chance to take part in the 'Cook-Up Kamamma' with Lily and learn some valuable cooking skills.

Staying at Lily's house as family guest is an honour and offers an insight into the culture and lifestyle of the people here. On arrival you will be taken on a tour of the township by Lily or a friend and introduced to local people, an opportunity few visitors to South Africa experience. While at Lily's you will spend time with the family and go for walks in the township or to Stellenbosch, a short taxi ride away. Lily can also arrange tours to Cape Town and Table Mountain.

The Cook-Up Kamamma is a real highlight. Lily is an excellent cook and is happy to share her knowledge and skills. You will help create a 4 course meal and then share in eating it, seated on the floor in traditional style, drinking homemade ginger beer. Once Upon a Stove has featured on the American TV programme '1000 Things to do Before you Die' and she has also represented the Western Cape in an international food exhibition in Toronto.

Lily will also share stories from her life, explaining how she has overcome adversity to set up her own cooking business to fund the building of her home. She is also involved in community projects involving children's education and counselling for those suffering domestic abuse.

A visit to Lily's is a privilege, a delight and a humbling experience and will be a lasting memory.

Pricing guidelines for South Africa

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). South Africa combines well with Botswana, Mauritius and Mozambique.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
£

  £50 to £100

  £100 to £200

  £200 to £300

Not an experience for everyone, Kayamandi is quite daunting when you first drive in with large numbers of shack houses and people everywhere. It's like a rabbit warren and even with directions, Lilly's house is hard to find. However, once you've found it (make sure you have a 'phone and call for directions!) you feel in safe hands. You're taken in as part of the family and stay in a room in her home. She's a great character and clearly loves hosting guests, showing them round the township and of course the cook ups which are fab! She also hs many interesting tales to tell which hold your attention for hours! A truly eye-opening, heart warming and heart breaking experience all rolled into one. Lilly is a truly inspirational woman.
