    About Mala Mala Game Reserve

    • Close Panel

Mala Mala Game Reserve consists of 33,000 acres of private land adjoining the Kruger National Park with 12 unfenced miles of border.  The uninterrupted flow of the Sand River through the property attracts game year round and has the longest stretch of Sand River of any Sabi Sand property.  The lodges are built on the western side of the river to avoid disturbance to the game movements into Mala Mala. The game reserved opened in 1964, one of the first areas of private land to switch from hunting to conservation and has had excellent environmental management by Michael Rattray for 50 years.  Most of the guides at Mala mala have university degrees in sciences and Mala Mala is a member of the national Parks Board and has been acknowledged with many eco-awards.

Guests have good chances of spotting the Big 5 and more. Game drives in open safari vehicles allow guests to explore the reserve. Guests can also explore the area on night drives which offer quite a different experience to the day drives. The camp also offers guided bush walks.

Mala Mala Main Camp offers luxury accommodation and excellent facilities. The 8 suites and 10 rooms all have ensuite bathroom, mini bar and tea & coffee making equipment. Communal facilities include a comfortable lounge, separate air-conditioned dining room and safari bar. In addition the camp has its own library, boutique and small fitness centre. There is a swimming pool where guests can cool down. The wooden safari deck is a perfect place to relax and enjoy views across the reserve. Children of all ages are welcome at the main camp.

Sable Camp is smaller and does not accept children under 12, being a more exclusive and luxurious experience, each room as his and hers bathrooms. There are 5 twin suites and a 2 bedroom luxury suite with a maximum capacity of 14 guests. There is a swimming pool and satellite internet and television facilities. Massage services available on request.

Rattrays Camp is the ultimate in safari luxury, owner hosted by the Rattray family and offering accommodation in 8 'khayas' (meaning home in Zulu) giving a great African atmosphere.  Maximum camp capacity is 16 guests and no children are accepted under 16 years.  Satellite internet and television connectivity is available. Each luxurious room as his and hers bathrooms, an outdoor shower and a private heated plunge pool.

    Pricing guidelines for South Africa

    • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). South Africa combines well with Botswana, Mauritius and Mozambique.

For a specific personal quote based on any tailor made itinerary you have in mind, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help you.
