Makweti Safari Lodge offers accommodation for a maximum of just 10 guests and is set in the Welgevonden Private Reserve in Limpopo Province. The lodge has a stunning setting and the main building has teak decks which overhang the Makweti Gorge, with great views. Accommodation is in 5 stone and thatch suites, luxuriously furnished and equipped with indoor and outdoor showers, Victorian bathtubs, log fires and private decks. The main lodge houses 2 lounges, a library and the Zebra bar and is decorated with African art, wood, leather and local fabrics. The camp takes pride in its cuisine which offers a wide choice of food including home-made soups and meals based on various game meats. Candle-lit dinners complemented by gorgeous South African wine are enjoyed in the elegant dining room or under the stars by the camp fire in the boma.
The 33,000 hectare Welgevonden Reserve has a range of scenery including rolling hills, red sandstone cliffs, rivers, open plains and savannas. The diverse range of game seen here includes giraffe, antelope, cheetah and wild dog as well as the Big 5. There are also some 300 species of birds making this an excellent birding area. The lodge offers twice daily game viewing, either drives in open vehicles or guided walking safaris. It is also possible to visit nearby rock paintings by San people. Closer to home, the lodge deck offers great views to the waterholer beneath which is visited by a variety of animals. The lodge also has plunge pools where guests can cool off after game viewing activities.
