Hazel's Homestays

Hazel's Homestays is run by Hazel, a retired teacher who with 11 other multi-ethnic, well-educated ladies form Hazel's Homestays. These are homes not hotels, so guests staying here will get an insight into what it is like to stay with a local, non-white family, something which is not commonly possible in South Africa. These families were all discriminated against under apartheid, and it is only by Hazel's strong will that this homestay project has got off the ground at all, as the families still find that they cannot compete in general with the white-owned guest houses. Accommodation is in en-suite bedrooms.

There are several attractions are within close proximity. The Cango Caves with its beautiful rock formations and vast caverns, the Cango wildlife ranch which boasts cheetahs, wild wild dogs and the rare white tiger, the Ostrich Show Farms which give an insight into the history of the ostrich and the industry that put Oudshoorn on the map. There are also curiosity shops for cultural paraphernalia.

Highlights

  • Stay in the home of a local, non-white family to gain a true insight into their way of life.

Viewpoints

My night with Hazel was not one to be forgotten. She and her friends (3 of whom I met) are all feisty, well-educated ladies with plenty of stories to tell, plenty of good food to offer, and all delighted to get the chance to offer hospitality to guests who want a homely touch to their stay.
