Primates of Rwanda

A 7 day trip taking in the gorillas, chimpanzees and other intereting areas of Rwanda.

Starting and finishing in Kigali, you have the opportunity for 2 gorilla treks and a chimp trek is included. 

See some of Africa's last remaining true rainforest and experience the myriad of species of wildlife to be found here.

Some cultural and historic detail is included with a city tour in Kigali and a visit to the Butarea Museum. Enjoy rural Rwandan life on the shores of Lake Kivu.

Accommodation used is clean and comfortable but quite basic.  Note that budget - mid range accommodation is quoted but in some places (at the gorilla area) there are more luxury lodges available - please ask us for a quotation.

Itinerary

Day 1   

Arrive Kigali where you are met and transfered to Ruhengeri a drive of 2 - 3 hours through beautiful hills.  Settle into your hotel close to the Parc National des Volcans.

Day 2

After an early breakfast depart to the park HQ where you will be driven to the trailhead and participate in the gorilla trek.  Spend an hour with these amazing animals then return to your lodge and relax.  The trek can take any number of hours and can be strenuous.

Day 3

Chance for a second gorilla trek if you wish.  Transfer to Gisenyi on Lake Kivu. Relax and explore the lake shore watching the local fishing communities go about their business.

Day 4

A long but scenic drive to the south of Rwanda.  Lunch on the way at Butare.  Arrive late afternoon at Nyungwe Forest which is Africa's largest remaining mountain rainforest.  Overnight in a simple guesthouse for two nights.

Day 5

Very early start and a guided Chimpanzee trek.  Return for a late lunch and the rest of day can be spent at your leisure.

Day 6

You will be driven back to Kigali, stopping on the way at the National Museum in Butare and have lunch.  Arrive Kigali late afternoon.  Dinner at own expense.

Day 7   

Morning city tour of Kigali then you will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight.

Is it for you?

Gorilla and chimp tracking is strenous and can be difficult under foot, a generally good level of fitness is needed and a relaxed attitude to travel using basic accommodation in a developing country.
