Tambomachay's purpose is not enitirely clear, but it is evident that the site was concerned with water. There are fountains, aqueducts and canals carved out of the stone, and nearby are natural springs and thermal sources which could have been directed into the carved channels. The site is composed of terraced rocks and there is also a circular watchtower. This could have been a military outpost, a temple dedicated to the worship of water or a ritual bathing place for the Inca elite, possibly used on ceremonial occasions only. Whatever its pupose, Tambomachay is a fascinating site just a few miles from the city. It is also located close to Pucapucara, so the 2 sites can be visited together.
