Pucapucara means 'red fort' in Quecha and is a complex of high walls, internal squares and staircases. The prupose and function of the structure is not entirely clear. It might have been a military stronghold, or possibly an out of town residence for the Inca Emperor. It is an interesting site to explore, with various underground chambers and great views across the Cusco Valley. It is close to Tambomachay, so visits to both can easily be combined.
