Posada Amazonas

Posada Amazonas is a 30 bedroom lodge located in the territory of the Ese’eja Native Community of Infierno, directly adjacent to the 1.9 million acre Tambopata National Reserve in south-eastern Amazonian Peru. The lodge is owned jointly by the Ese’eja community and a Peruvian ecotourism company. Thanks to its accessibility, excellent wildlife observation opportunities and rustic but comfortable accommodations, Posada Amazonas is the ideal short introductory nature tour to Amazonia´s richest rain forests

The lodge was built combining traditional native architecture and materials (wood, palm fronds, wild cane and clay) with modern, low-impact, eco-lodge technology. It consists of a complex of ten sections: rooms, dining area and kitchen, relaxation area and service facilities.

The rooms complex consists of four structures with six rooms per unit arranged in doubles, triples and cuadruples. Visitors are in permanent contact with the forest, even in the rooms: the wall looking into the forest is an unscreened waist-high veranda! Bedrooms are equipped with mosquito nets, bedside tables and hammocks or lounge chairs. Bathrooms are private with showers and flush toilets, but cold water only.

The ample bar and dining room seats up to 80 people. Buffet meals combine international, Peruvian and local cuisine. Vegetarians are welcome. The lodge is illuminated by windlamps and candlelight and there is a generator for recharging batteries.

The close proximity of Posada Amazonas to the Tambopata National Reserve provides access to some of the Amazon’s most biologically diverse rainforest. The Bahuaja-Sonene National Park and the adjacent Tambopata National Reserve protect habitats ranging from the Andean highlands around the rivers’ headwaters through some of the last remaining intact cloud forests to the lowland rainforests of the Amazon basin. Over 1,300 bird species (including 32 parrot species - 10% of the world’s total), 200 mammal species, 90 frog species, 1,200 butterfly species and 10,000 species of higher plants are protected within this reserve.

During a stay at Posada Amazonas there are a mix of activities available including rainforest hikes, ethnobotanical walks, night walks and talks, and a farm visit. Canopy access is easy with a 35 metre scaffolding tower just a 20-minute walk from the lodge with hopeful view of toucans, parrots, macaws and mixed species flocks. A family of 9 Giant Otters can often be seen on a nearby oxbow lake, as well as other lakeside wildlife such as caiman, Hoatzin and Horned Screamers. There is also a parrot clay lick just a 20-minute walk from the lodge. From a hide about 20-metres from the clay lick it is possible to see dozens of parrots and parakeets descend on most clear mornings to ingest the clay. Species such as Mealy, Yellow-headed and Blue-headed Parrots, and Dusky-headed Parakeets can usually be seen.

Posada Amazonas is a fabulous rainforest experience.

There were so many great bits but I think the rainforest was a real highlight for all of us. Oscar our guide was brilliant and it was just unlike anything any of us had ever done before.
