About Sagamartha National Park

  • Close Panel

Sagamartha is the Nepalese name for Mount Everest, and the Sagamartha National Park was established in 1976 to protect this region. As well as Mount Everest, the park includes many other famous peaks, including Lohtse and Amu Dablam. The park can only reached by several days trek from the nearest airstrip at Lukla, or an even longer trek from the nearest roadhead at Jiri. Yaks and human porters carry supplies for the approximately 3,000 sherpas who make their homes in some of the remotest and highest villages in the world.

The lower slopes of the National Park are heavily forested and this region is home to numerous rare species. You would have to be exceptionally fortunate to see the elusive snow leopard (and even luckier to see the mythical yeti), but there are numerous rare bird species as well as hardy mammals such as the black bear and musk deer found within the park.
