Located about an hour's drive from Kathmandu at an altitude of 1,500m, Dhulikhel is a typical Newari hill town surrounded by Tamang villages famous for its mountain views. A full day's walk from Kathmandu on the main road to Tibet, Dhulikhel developed as an important trading centre, with rich Newari architecture including several important temples. In the 1960s, after the road to Tibet was paved, Dulkihel developed as an important tourist destination.
Dulikhel enjoys a panoramic view of the Himalayas that stretch across the horizon, with almost 300 miles of mountains visible. As well as exploring the attractive old town, the region offers several excellent hikes, ranging from short walks taking an hour or two to longer full-day treks, visiting the interesting villages that dot the region. With some great accommodation, this is a good spot to escape from the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu and enjoy the beautiful scenery and fascinating culture of the Kathmandu Valley.
