The Gurung are one of the larger ethnic groups of Central Nepal with a population of about half a million, and they are the most commonly encountered people in the Annapurnas. Like many of Nepal's ethnic groups, they have their own language, history and culture.
Traditional, the Gurung were involved in sheep herding, farming, and the trans-Himalayan trade with Tibet, and the majority of modern Gurungs are still an agricultural people. However, from the 19th century many Gurung people have achieved fame serving in the British and Indian Gurkha regiments where they have won several Victoria Crosses amongst other honours.
Most Gurung embrace Tibetan Buddhism, mixed with elements of traditional Bon shamanism. Hinduism has grown amongst some Gurung people in close contact with their lowland neighbour, and the worship of Buddhist, Hindu and Bon deities is not uncommon.
