The Gurung are one of the larger ethnic groups of Central Nepal with a population of about half a million, and they are the most commonly encountered people in the Annapurnas.

The Newari people are the dominant ethnic group in the Kathmandu Valley, and one of the largest ethnic groups in the country. Traditionally a highly literate, urban culture, Newari art and architecture tend to be the most visible part of Nepalese civilization.

The Sherpa people originally came from eastern Tibet, but migrated to Nepal within the last 500 years. Most live in the eastern part of the country, with the oldest Sherpa village being Pangboche. The vast majority (over 90%) of Sherpas are Buddhists, although they also incorporate animist and shamanistic practices.

The Tharu are the largest and long-established ethnic group of the Terai region of southern Nepal, living in villages near the jungles of Chitwan, Bardia and Koshi Tappu.
