Patan

World Heritage Site

About Patan

  • Close Panel

Separated by the Bagmati River from Kathmandu, Patan is possibly the oldest of the cities in the Kathmandu Valey and was once an independent city. Today, Patan is part of the Kathmandu metropolis, and it is possible to explore the two cities in a single day.

Like Kathmandu, Patan has its own Durbar Square with many palaces and temples which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Kumbeshwor Temple is an impressive five-tiered pagoda-style Hindu temple which is usually bustling with activity, while the nearby Golden Temple is the most important Buddhist shrine in the city.
