About Matemo Island

  • Close Panel

Situated in the magnificent Quirimbas Archipelago off the coast of Northern Mozambique, the remote Island of Matemo offers idyllic Mozambique island accommodation.

Matemo Island Resort is an un-spoilt, unexplored island paradise, with beautiful white beaches and thousands of palm trees swaying in the breeze.
From the air upon looking down you see masses of green palms and the most turquoise clear water imaginable. Matemo Island is 8 kilometres in length and 3 kilometres wide. It is an extremely relaxed and friendly resort, yet resort is not really the correct word to describe Matemo. Granted it is bigger than its sister property Medjumbe which is tiny, but Matemo is not really a resort in the true sense of the word. It is still quite intimate, yet offers a wide range of activities and water sports and great food.

The design is 'Mozambique meets Arabian nights' with rich colors in reds, oranges, silks and blues. The public areas have Indian day beds and mozaics and a huge collection of antique clocks. The main restaurant and bar area looks out over the pool and to the beach and ocean beyond and its endless views.

The chalets are spread out along the beach, spaced fairly close together, but there is a long beach to the right of the main beach which is perfect for exploring rocky coves and white sands dotted with palms. The island of Matemo is inhabited, but the community live on the other side of the island -hence the property feels like a private island experience.

There are 24 Chalets: 8 twin beds and 16 queen size double beds, each with en-suite bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers, bathtub with a view, large windows and access directly onto the sandy beach. All chalets are within 10 meters of beach, with a large front verandah with hammock, chair / loungers and beach towel drying rack. All chalets have air conditioning, mosquito screens, mini bar, satellite TV, tea-/coffee-making facilities, hair dryer & electronic safe. 2 Chalets offer a private dining area.

There are also 2 family units that consisting of a double and a twin with a hallway link. The two chalets have a common verandah.

There is a swimming pool, bar areas with hammocks and day beds and many activities on offer here. Non motorised water sports are included in the price and options can be booked for diving, fishing, boat charters and other activities.

Pricing guidelines for Mozambique

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £700 to £900 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Return flights from Joburg to Pemba (in northern Mozambique) will add on roughly £400. Mozambique combines well with South Africa, Malawi and southern Tanzania.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

  £50 to £150
