Nuarro Lodge is a 'bush and beach' eco lodge which opended in July 2009 and is situated on the gorgeous Baixo do Pinda Peninsula in Northern Mozambique. Access is by flying to Nampula then either a 45 minute flight or 3-4 hour road transfer. The bay is protected by a huge reef, giving fantastic snorkelling and diving opportunities.
This lodge is set on a tropical beach surrounded by pristine bushland. The coastline is steeped in history and culture and trips can be taken to the nearly World Heritage site of Olha de Mozambique. There are deserted beaches, beautiful reefs, walks to waterfalls, bird watching and visits to local villages to enjoy. The local Macua village will welcome you into their lives to see how people live in rural Mozambique.
There are 12 beach front chalets (10 have an upstairs area which can be used as twin beds for families). The restaurant has panoramic views over the bay with a cocktail bar and central lounge area. There is a cosy library area, TV room and internet access. All buildings are in the sand dunes looking over the bay. The design enables the sea breeze to pass through which provides comfortable indoor accommodation all year round. Each chalet is spacious with large verandah, hammock and sun loungers. They are spaced out along the dunes for privacy and minimum impact on the environment. Much of the furniture and crafts are locally made and the rooms have large king size beds and en-suites with indoor and outdoor showers.
The lodge is on a site of around 10 hectares with access straight onto the beach which is 2.5km in length with lots of hideaway sites to while away the day.
There is an activity centre with dive school. Nuarro offers rental of diving gear, tanks, PADI courses and fully kitted dive boats with experienced instructors.
Whale watching can be enjoyed in season (late June to late November) when Humpback Whales come close to the bay with their young. They can even be spotted from the guest beds! There is a small coral island off the beach which can provide an excellent viewpoint or take a dhow trip to get closer to them.
Nuarro Lodge has a strong ethical and fair trade concept, managed and built by its owners to blend into the local environment and by local people with local materials. The land is co-owned with the local community. There is a safe, potable fresh water supply. There are many local projects involving the community set up by the lodge including a community centre providing education, health clinic and agricultural projects.
