About Explore Gorongosa

  • Close Panel

Explore Gorongosa is the first operation to offer private safaris within the National Park and have been part of the re-establishing of wildlife into this region following years of civil war.

This excellent restoration project was initiated by the Government of Mozambique and the Carr Foundation. Explore Gorongosa offers a rustic comfortable camp which is moved to suit the seasons and wildlife patterns.

Experienced, local guides take guests on drives and walks through the park covering the wide variety of habitats.

The current maximum number of guests which would be in camp at one time is eight. The activities are mainly by vehicle (day and night) with as much walking as guests wish. Optional canoe and mokoro safaris are taken when possible. Fly camping also operates either in the wilderness or on Mount Gorongosa.

We recommend at least 3 nights / 4 days but preferably longer to get the full spectrum of experiences on offer; 5 nights / 6 days is perfect.  Each activity normally lasts 2-4 hours but it is possible to pack picnics and go out for a full day. Top regional professional guides with experienced local Mozambican trackers are used plus trainee guides who are learning skills.

The camp staff are all local and the ratio of staff to guests is usually one on one. The rooms are 'classic cottage style' mobile large tents. They are bug proof with netting on windows and doors with extra mossie nets around the beds. Tents can have twin or large king size beds. Each room has a spacious bathroom next to the tent (open air) with hot bucket shower, 'earth closet' eco toilet, vanity stand with basin. The rooms are set to open lengthways which gives large double 'window - doors' that can be fully rolled up. They have a shade verandah and cushioned day bed or hammock and camp chairs. There are currently four tents.

All camps are powered by solar energy for lights. Fridges and freezers are powered by gas. There is no generator but camera batteries can be charged through inverters. The park HQ has satellite and cell communications. This is 20 minutes from Explore Gorongosa. The camp uses VHF radio and satellite phone to communicate between camps and HQ and back to Beira for emergencies.

Fly camping must be booked well in advance and these camps are positioned according to guests interests. The small tents are mosquito proofed. It is possible to sleep under the stars, but there are dome tent on standby for nervous travellers or wet weather!

Pricing guidelines for Mozambique

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £700 to £900 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Return flights from Joburg to Pemba (in northern Mozambique) will add on roughly £400. Mozambique combines well with South Africa, Malawi and southern Tanzania.

For a specific personal quote based on any tailor made itinerary you have in mind, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help you.
